MontVox 1.0

First version shows you latest check-ins on Foursquare and Gowalla as well as news and Twitter messages from and about the mountain town.

We got the first version of MontVox website working, so that I can let others to take a look and give us some feedback.
MontVox is a web/mobile service that aims to capture the ski towns buzz by giving users location based information and social network/micro-blogging feeds that are most relevant to that particular resort.
This way user can, just by looking at the one page, get an outlook of “what’s happening?”

In a order to understand it better, I tell you why I build it:
I have spent seasons in a ski resorts in Finland, Sweden, USA, Austria and I am currently living in Chamonix.
When outdoor enthusiast like you and me go to new resort, it is pretty hard to figure that place out. You want to know where are the best places to ski, eat, climb, hike, etc.
Normally you figure that out by asking locals and searching on Internet. First you start by interrogating airport transfer guy, then hotel reception, guy next to you on a lift or on a bar and on it goes, the search for the local information.
Thanks todays technology, we can now learn a lot from the Internet – if we just know what to look for. Google search, local news sites, etc. all those site gives good information for the one, who has time and skills to search.

Entering MontVox:
On past 12 months, location based services has grown to become very interesting new way to share location information. Two most promising new services are Foursquare and Gowalla. Their idea is very simple: By using their applications on a mobile phone you can “check-in” to location that you are visiting and as these services are linked to Facebook and Twitter, they will push your location information to your friends and followers.

Map showing check-ins:
Now MontVox’s Map shows you check-ins that are done around you on a ski resort. You can see where people have checked-in, how many times and who have done the latest check-ins and who is the current Mayor.
It is now still limited, as information goes, but on next version, you will see much more info about the location…

Latest News and Tweets:
Below the Map, we have up-to-date News from local news resources and latest Twitter messages from or about this resort and people in it.

Weather:
We are partnering with Weather2 to give you a relevant weather information that you can find on a right-hand-side column. Forecast will be updated on every few hours, so everything on MontVox is as fresh as it gets.

As said, this is just a very first version, and next one is well on it’s way to be launched in July. On next version we will give you more venue (place) information and most importantly it will work together with our soon-to-be-launched iPhone App.

Latest MontVox news can be found from this blog, and I also recommend to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

My Favorite Tools: Skype

Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis know how to make money on the web (for themselves). First they found file sharing service Kazaa, then Skype and ip-tv Joost. Now, as they still hold some Skype patents, they are back as shareholders with 14% stake.

On “My favorite Tools”-series, I write about online services and devices that I could not live without. First one is Skype.

Since 2003

I have 295 contacts on Skype and 52 of them are currently online. I can reach my network of people from Bangladesh to San Francisco and from Moscow to Kathmandu. I love Skype. I love it. I love it. I been daily user ever since they  launched back in 2003. Somehow I managed to miss my usual username “ransu” as someone else took it before me, so I had to settle for “ransuroc”.

Anyway, Skype is, among with the email, my most important communication tool, beating easily mobile phone. I would much rather give my phone away then stop using Skype.

I talk on Skype only about once a week – but chat is non-stop, pretty much all the time when I am awake. On Skype, I have my son, Junnu, in Finland. Coco, when she is travelling for business. My parents and a sister’s family. It is so easy to ask them “what’s up?” on daily basis, as I happen to live mostly outside of Finland. Junnu sends his favorites from Youtube and Spotify, while my mum uses Skype sometimes almost like an email, or dairy, writing long texts about “what has happened at their countryside living?”

As friends goes, Facebook has taken over that sector, but business – oh boy, I have everybody on Skype.

I work with iPhone developers in Pakistan, designer in Bangkok, CSS/html guy in Bangladesh, Amazon AWS expert in NY and Garmin/Google Maps expert in Atlanta. Everyone is on Skype for a chat and then we do actual project management on 37signals Basecamp.

On advertising sales, I have West Coast sales team in, as well as my ad serving support guys from OpenX (Pasadena, CA and London, UK). Also few ad networks are within a click “start chat” as well as about 1/3 of the websites that I work with on ad sales.

So how to use Skype effectively?

Skype is mainly voice-over-ip (voip) service, but it also has a great chat, group chat, conference call and screen-sharing functions. I use them all, but majority is chat and group-chat.

My trick is to have very low barrier to contact people, and I get straight-to-the-point after quick “hello, how are you?”. Also, I always answer something immediately, so that people learn, that on Skype, I am the quick responder – lead by example, or something like it.

What’s next?

Last fall the was a huge hype around Google Wave, but that hype died (lamed)quick as no-one else used it. Wave looks like a great tool, but I need my contacts to use it (network effect), before it really becomes valuable for me. iChat (Same as Google Talk, AOL IM) is low on penetration outside of USA and MSN Messenger is not just last year, but last decate, and I mean 90’s.

But regardless of Google Wave’s slow start, Google has more in mind in a order to take over the collaboration/chat/phone/voip world. Lately, they been acquiring small voip companies and Google Voice (ex-Grand Central) is already a great service that connects yours calls via Internet (US only at this point).  When Google manages to put Wave, Voice, Talk, Apps and Gmail into one simple-to-use package, Skype will have first real competitor.

Skype’s new owners

When eBay bought Skype back on 2005, ex-CEO  Meg Whitman needed more than 50 pages Powerpoint to explain what a great fit it is, just like PayPal. Well, it wasn’t and eBay finally sold majority to investment group late 2009.  This investment group that includes Marc Andreessen is believed to ignite some new fire to Skype’s product development, and I am excited to see next big developments on my favorite communications tool.

Chamonix locals Fredrik Ericsson and Trey Cook have started their “all-summer-long” trip to K2 – World Most Dangerous Mountain. Zuck is not just the CEO, he is the King

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has had smart people around him as he build the company and it’s financing/VC structure.

As business and tech media has been mocking Facebook’s insane privacy settings – I think too harshly – It was time for Zuck to explain their improvements a bit on Wall Street Journal’s D Conference. It went badly and people started to say that he should resign or board should remove him. Well, as Zuck’s business card says ‘I’m the CEO, bitch”, it is not that easy to move Zuck from the top post as he controls 3 out of 5 board seats. Here’s the full story by Silicon Alley Insider

Beauty of free diving

Free diving is definitely one of the most beautiful sports out there. It is dangerous, but yet always looks so zen-like cool.

Here’s the video where William Trubridge breaks the freediving world record without fins with a dive to 88m (288 feet) in 3:30 in Dean’s Blue Hole, Bahamas.

Everyday 10K

On a weekdays between 1-2pm I start my daily running ritual and put on my Nikes, Garmin and iPod. Then I start a 4K climb to the top of Route de Vaudagne, where I get nice rolling down to the Prarion ski station and back via Route du Napoleon that Mr. Bonaparte used back-in-days to go past the Mont Blanc.

This an hour run is essential part of my day. It clears my head, gives me time to think and time listen latest tech podcasts, which I normally don’t remember anything about, as I am so in my thoughts. Running that loop recharges me to the second phase of the day – the afternoon shift that usually goes on at least until 9pm, when I have a glass of Chardonnay and start heading towards the night shift…
